Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Ron Johnson
Before coming to DDS, Johnson served as program coordinator for the University of Georgia Men’s Basketball program (2008-2009). Johnson has engineered a tremendous turnaround in the boys basketball program. In his first year, Johnson led the team to a 22-7 record following a 5-17 season the previous year. Prior to coaching at Georgia, Johnson was the Athletic Director and Head Boys Basketball Coach at Cannon School in Concord, N.C. In his four years at Cannon (2004-08), Johnson led the Cougars to a 98-27 record. His teams there won three straight conference titles, advanced to three State Final Fours and won the 2006 North Carolina Independent School State title. A native of Somerset, N.J., Johnson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management from Barry University in Miami, Fla. in 1989. While at Barry, he was a four-year starter and holds the school’s career records in scoring and steals. His #12 jersey was retired by Barry in 1989 and he was named to the university’s Athletic Wall of Honor in 1994. Previously, Johnson was Head Boys Basketball Coach at two high schools in Florida: Central Catholic High School in Melbourne (1994-97) and The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach (1998-2003). While at Benjamin, he was named Palm Beach County Coach of the Year three times. In 2001, he was named State of Florida Coach of the Year when his team captured the State of Florida Class 2A State title. In addition, he served as Assistant Coach at Binghamton University (1997-98) and at The SEED School in Washington, DC (2003-04), where he was the Athletic Director and Head Boys Basketball Coach. Shiley played point guard/shooting guard at Bloomsburg University (1997-2001) on a team that made NCAA Div. II tournament appearances for three years in a row. Her sophomore year the team was ranked No. 2 nationally in Div. II. Shiley captained the team her junior and senior year. In 2002 after being injured, she served as a student assistant coach at Bloomsburg. She graduated with a B.Ed. in Secondary Education/English and a B.A. in Psychology from Bloomsburg and holds a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Kutztown University. She says her work as assistant coach here will allow her to build on last season's momentum when the team improved to 7-18. Shiley teaches US and MS English at DDS, is the Senior Advisor and Alumni Co-Coordinator. She is the founded of LoveProgressPark, a nonprofit that enhances recreational opportunities and afterschool programming for school-age children in the Charlotte area. |
